5 Reasons to be Thankful for Backyard Birds

The adage goes, don’t count your chicks before they hatch, but backyard chicken owners have lots of blessings to count each and every day of the year. These feathery friends add so much to their lives, that it seems easy to count the many way they enrich lives daily.

  1. Companionship

Chickens are friendly and each have a distinct personality. They offer a bird lover someone to visit with, share their day’s highs and lows with and are always willing to listen. Backyard birds do make great companions because they rely on their humans for food, water, shelter and security, so they know they will have companionship at least twice a day, and when you are together, there is nothing better!

  1. Entertainment

Chickens take bird watching to an entirely different level. With their unique personalities, there is no telling what they will get into, especially in your backyard with various plants, yard decorations and in their own coop. Chickens like to play too, so be sure to provide them toys like a ball to peck around and a dirt bath, and you can be entertained for hours just by watching their antics.

  1. Education

There’s nothing quite like learning about where our food comes from, and when you are learning about chicken care and the egg production cycle, that is a great way to provide yourself and your kids or grandkids some real basic ag egg-ucation. There is a lot to know about taking care of your birds, and it is always fun to learn a new skill. Sharing it with family or your neighbors even makes it more enjoyable!

  1. Memories

Some of my earliest memories are gathering eggs on the farm, and when I think of backyard birds, those memories of my 4-year-old-self come flooding back. Hopefully, you have some similar memories, or perhaps, you are building your new memories of watching chicks hatch, building a coop or gathering your own eggs.

  1. Protein

We can all be grateful for the wonderful protein that comes from eggs. Backyard chickens provide some wonderfully healthy, packed with protein nutritious little nuggets, right at your fingertips. Isn’t it great to be able to go out your backdoor and gather these nutritious and delicious eggs each day? That’s something worth crowing about!

Backyard birds definitely provide a lot of reasons to us to be thankful this year. From companionship, in a time when we haven’t always been able to get out, to raising our own nutrition source, backyard chickens are a big blessing in our lives.
